In just a few minutes each day, everything we watch gets edited down and copied onto a thumb drive for watching on the deck or on a plane. It works on black frames and will 'suggest' the commercial breaks based on length. I built my own box and I've gotten to where I rely on VideoReDo's Ad Detective. And some are putting the static logo in a promo halfway through the break to fool programs, too. And I've noticed a number of cable networks are going from one frame of programming right into our out of commercials with no black frames. Especially with local stations that are late with the rejoin. It'll usually catch the start of a commercial break, but not always the end. I believe it was comskip that looked for the static bug.ДЇade-to-black doesn't entirely work, either. The static bug vanishes a few seconds before the end of a segment and reappears ten seconds into the next segment. It's pretty easy to automate based on the network bug.

I recall reading somewhere on Tivo's website that the commercial skip feature is not available in California for some reasonД¬lick to expand. I seriously doubt that Tivo has someone monitoring all program material and manually eliminating commercials. I don't know what happened to this box or why it was not successful.

The theory was that all commercials are a fixed length duration and they supposedly able to eliminate 95% of the commercials. Then it counted either 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds and the number of fade to black events (each commercial ends with a fade to black until the next commercial) and if it detected the program signal, it started to record again. This happens when the video signal level reaches zero amplitude and no synch pulse is on the video carrier. They claimed it was triggered by what is called a 'fade to black' after the program but before the first commercial. If I recall in my younger days (many decades ago -) there was a black box to connect to a VCR (remember them?) that quit sending the signal to the VCR and initiated the pause function when it detected a commercial. I don't know, but right now, I am loving it. Perhaps the settlement of that case left a hole between mechanical commercial skipping features and people doing it. I remember many years ago a similar feature was included in devices, but the manufacturers were sued and complelled to dispense with the mechanism. Apparently, the networks and advertisers have no say at this point, and it is up to TIVO to decide which shows it has the resources to dedicate to the task. The TIVO guide indicates each show so programmed. In reading the material on this, I gleaned that TIVO has assigned a team to watch certain shows and manually program the commercial segments for each show covered. No scrolling, ff or anything but, Bam, back to the meat. If you are unaware, the feature allows the user to hit a button on the remote and on certain recorded programming the recording skips immediately forward (or back) skipping the entire commercial block and resumes playing. It is fantastic! I am a Roamio owner and had not been paying attention, which caused me to miss this feature on the new TIVO Bolt units replacing Roamio. TIVO incorporated this feature nationwide on its existing Roamio units starting this week.
